Shaping Our Canopy: Upcoming Tree Replacements and Honoring a Beekman Landmark Several structurally-weakened trees on Elm Street, Andrews Lane and in Horan’s Landing Park will need to be replaced because of ConEd’s pruning of trees away from power lines. Our village arborist, Peter Strom, is consulting with DPW to select smaller species, better suited for overhead lines, in the fall planting season.We want to take a moment to note the history of a tall elm tree on Beekman Avenue that sadly needs to come down (see image above). Once a common street tree known for its arching canopy, elm trees have been decimated by disease over the last century. This tree, near the corner of Pocantico Street and in front of the Gentlemen’s Tailor Shop, has given great beauty and shade to our village for a very long time.This elm may even be as old as the Van Tassel building that it fronts. John D. Rockefeller, Jr. opened the Van Tassel complex in 1930 as part of his vision for housing reform that also included experimental garden apartments in the Bronx and Harlem. Named by his wife, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, the Van Tassel site plan included many specimen trees.This tree shaded generations of residents who have called the Van Tassel home, some of whose stories were captured by Krista Madsen as part of Warner Oral Histories: Life in the Van Tassel. The village will plant a new tree in its spot that we hope will be part of our village life for the next century. |
