Where Does Your Trash Go?

An incinerator in Peekskill
We’re starting a new series to track where our municipal waste ends up. We’re starting with basic trash.
Where does it go?
Charles Point Resource Recovery Facility—also known as Wheelabrator—in Peekskill.
How much does it cost?
$31 per ton, including the cost to haul it there.
How am I paying for it?
There’s a line on your property tax bill “County Solid Waste.” It’s probably in the hundreds of dollars.
What does Wheelabrator do with it?
They burn it. It’s an incinerator. The ash then goes to a dump in Putnam, CT.
What are the pros and cons:
PRO: They actually are producing energy, a lot of it. They make 393.4 gigawatts annually (about 40,000 households). When the Sierra Club studied the issue, they didn’t find any easy other option.
CON: Westchester Alliance for Sustainable Solutions says it is the biggest polluter in Westchester. They have been campaigning to find another way to get rid of trash for years.
