Food Scrap Collection Tips for Small Spaces

Sleepy Hollow has several sites to drop off food waste, but if there isn’t a convenient place to store your scraps in your building, making frequent trips to dispose of them grows old pretty quickly.

One tried and true tip that helps make storing food scraps easier is to freeze them. Add food waste to a freezer safe bag or container until they get full. If you use a Ziploc baggie to store them, remember not to dump it into the food scraps bin with your waste. Plastic in our compost is a no-no!

If counter space is an issue, consider using a fridge collection bin. You can buy fancy narrow ones to fit nicely, or simply recycle an old yogurt container. Refrigerating or freezing food waste is also a good practice in summertime, when food scraps can get stinky or attract bugs.

If your apartment has outdoor space, consider tucking a larger bucket there to collect your food scraps. These containers won’t take up very much space on balconies, patios, or yards, and will give you more time to collect scraps until you have to dump it.
