Waste Reduction

Sleepy Hollow is committed to reducing waste – but we have our work cut out for us! Currently, the village recycles at a lower rate than the rest of the county:

50% – Westchester’s Average Recycling Rate (Recycling as a proportion of overall waste)

35% – Sleepy Hollow’s Recycling Rate (Recycling as a proportion of overall waste)

Why reduce our waste?

Our trash is shipped up to Peekskill, where it is incinerated at a waste-to-energy facility. We need to work together to reduce the amount of emissions and pollution created by burning our trash, especially the low-hanging fruit of recyclables that should never be incinerated, such as food scraps, plastics, and paper.

Here’s how to reduce your waste:

Food Scrap Recycling / Reciclaje de Restos de Comida

Food waste takes up the largest share of our trash. Turn it into dirt instead!

Recycling (Two-Stream) / Reciclaje (Dos Corrientes)

90 percent of the residentially recyclable material collected in Westchester is processed – so sorting your plastics, aluminum, glass, and paper materials is well worth it.

Reuse, Repair, & Recycle Even More!

We’ve compiled a list of resources to help keep clothing, plastic, and your belongings out of the waste stream.
