Like our new look?

Ever since we renamed ourselves “Sustainable Sleepy Hollow” to represent the united efforts of the Sleepy Hollow Environmental Advisory Committee (SHEAC) and the Climate Smart Community (CSC) Task Force, we’ve been wanting a makeover. Thanks to Sleepy Hollow artist and environmentalist Melissa Lohman-Wild, we’ll wave this logo high for years to come. Thanks, Melissa!

If you read our newsletter, you probably already make decisions that minimize your environmental footprint. But if you’re anything like me (hi! It’s Kiko Bourne, the ghost writer for Sustainable Sleepy Hollow newsletters for the past couple of years), you may tend to shy away from more “complicated” balls of wax. For example, I feel like I’ve mastered zero waste practices and car-free transport, but not until this past year have I zoomed in on renewable energy, and how it can be incorporated into the buildings where we live, learn and work.

So I invite you to join me and others in the Sustainable Sleepy Hollow crew in learning more about how we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our buildings. Read on for a new app that will save you money while doing so, as well as the New York State legislation that will invest in renewable heat–which you can help to push over the finish line!

In case you were curious, this is how buildings stack up to other sources of carbon emissions in our state…

And this is how utility companies are partnering with energy users to do better.

Here’s where YOU come in: Sign up for Grid Rewards and get cash back for doing your part to save energy!

The Villages of Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown, along with the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns, are working to put together a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan to make our streets much safer.

To help identify what locations and intersections to address, and possible solutions to rectify problems, residents of Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown are encouraged to take an online survey. Input from residents will be key to determining what changes to our streets happen.

Please take a few minutes and respond to the survey. And please share it with others!

Turf on Sports Fields: Opportunity to Learn More about Environmental and Health Impacts

The Hastings Conservation Commission invites you to an evening panelist discussion on sports field options. We are undertaking this to help our community understand the wonderful choices that exist, because our school board has put forth a proposal to install two synthetic turf fields. We thought this may be of interest to our colleagues in the region. Please share with your committees as you see fit.

Wednesday, February 26th 7pm

James V. Harmon Community Center, 44 Main Street, Hastings-on-Hudson

Turf Choice

The Hastings Conservation Commission invites you to come learn about innovations in the sports world that are a game-changer for playing fields. Our panelists will discuss new, proven technologies that produce a superior playing surface for all kinds of weather, plus how institutions can care for a natural grass field in ways that keep them playable. These alternatives are less expensive than synthetic turf, saving taxpayers money, and they promote ecosystem and human health. Come learn about options before we install dated strategies for our fields!
