The Monarchs are Coming…We Hope!
Over the Memorial Day weekend, Sustainable Sleepy Hollow partnered with local resident Ryan Nuckel of Rosewater Design to install a monarch habitat garden on Beekman Avenue across from Village Hall. The garden fulfills one of the promises made by our Mayor as part of the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge, to install and maintain a monarch habitat garden on public property.
Monarch caterpillars are picky eaters and only munch on the leaves of native milkweed plants, so we’ve included both swamp milkweed and butterfly milkweed. For the adult monarchs, there are native nectar plants like yarrow and black-eyed susan. We plan to add educational signage over the summer, and hope you will stop by to learn about the fascinating life cycle of monarchs.
If you see that an insect has been nibbling on the milkweed leaves, then you know that our garden has succeeded in attracting a female monarch to lay her eggs. Monarch caterpillars have evolved the ability to tolerate the poison in milkweed sap (the white “milk” that oozes from the leaves when torn) and it makes them taste bad when birds eat them. Let’s keep an eye on the garden this summer and see if we become the proud parents of a brood of monarch caterpillars.
Thanks goes to Ryan Nuckel for his generous donation of plants and design expertise to make this garden a success.
