2023 was a big year for Sustainable Sleepy Hollow. Our mighty band of volunteers…
- Hosted our inaugural Compost Giveback Day and Repair Cafe events in partnership with the Tarrytown Environmental Advisory Council (TEAC)
- Advocated for land conservation in Pocantico Lakes, a clean Hudson safe from nuclear waste water, and storm water mitigation measures
- Launched the Grow Gardens, Not Garbage waste reduction campaign to share oodles of tips for village residents to start composting
- Helped turn PTA celebrations like Pancakes with Santa into zero waste events
- Partnered with the fire department and Friends of Peabody Preserve for a post-Halloween pumpkin smash
…and so much more! In 2024, we want to make it easier for you to get involved, whether it’s taking action at home or supporting one of our below priority initiatives.
Which of our 2024 priorities can you help with?
Greening the Village: A brand new committee under the Sustainable Sleepy Hollow umbrella with the goal of organizing and improving the care of our public green spaces in parks and on street corners. If you have an interest in pollinators, native plants or you just like to get your hands dirty, join in! (Email Susanne Jones at DKgirl0804@gmail.com!)
Earth Month: We’re planning a lot of fun events in April, and looking for a few new faces to join our efforts (Interested? Email Rachael Sokolowski!)
Zero Waste Campaign: Last year we created a waste reduction campaign focused on food scrap recycling; this year we’re going back to the basics to make sure everyone in the village knows how to recycle right. (Interested? email Kirsten Hase-McLaughlin!)

Climate Action Plan Update
Thanks to all who attended Sleepy Hollow’s first Climate Action Plan Community Workshop on January 10th. After opening remarks from Mayor Rutyna, our consultants at VHB laid the groundwork with a presentation on Carbon Emissions and Climate Risk. We learned how a majority of our emissions are generated (Hello, cars, trucks, and buildings!), and saw maps of where different climate impacts will be felt the most in our village. Photos of recent flooding on the East Parcel and Riverwalk were particularly notable. Then we broke up into groups to focus on specific areas of interest, such as Local Economy, Parks, and Transportation. Residents shared their own observations and concerns about climate impacts, as well as ideas for what can be achieved.
Please join us at the second Community Workshop: Decarbonization and Adaptation Strategies, where we’ll learn about climate solutions and discuss what could work for Sleepy Hollow.
Wednesday, March 6th, 6pm-8pm at the Sleepy Hollow Senior Center, 55 Elm St.
